In Memory of Mary Tully
Mary Tully passed the evening of Wednesday, August 14, 2013. She left in peace with loved ones at her side, trailed by our prayers. She is smiling, as she always did, only now upon the face of her Lord.
Mary was born March 3, 1924 to Bart and Lela Spellman. Bart was a notable athlete and football coach at the Universities of Oregon and Washington, before his successful business career in Seattle, where Mary was raised. Lela was a school teacher before marriage, and was known for a zest for life that Mary inherited. Mary's brother, David, served gallantly in the Korean War. Her brother, John, pursued a career in law and politics, and was elected governor of the state of Washington in 1980. Mary graduated from Duchesen University with a degree in history, and worked in banking and education before marrying Hugh Eugene Tully in 1947.
The couple had three children, Mike, Kathi and Steve. Upon Gene's passing in 2005, Mary moved to University Village in Thousand Oaks. She remained active in her church and a number of charities, and very close to her children, six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Mary was a talented artist, who made gifts of her paintings to friends and family, and was no less giving of her love for life and people. She was seldom at a loss for a smile or conversation about the newest book she had read, the movie she had seen, politics and elections, the pictures of her family she always kept close at hand, and pretty much any subject her many friends and loved ones could imagine.
Mary was an open and giving friend who touched more lives than she could ever know. Still today, the easy grace, the quiet dignity and the firm faith by which she lived her life serve as guideposts and inspirations for her children and children's children. She is missed but she will always be with us.
Funeral services to celebrate the life of Mary Tully will be held 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, August 21, 2013, at St. Paschal's Catholic Church in Thousand Oaks.
