PHILIP ROSS FOXWELL, SR Philip 98, of Alhambra, CA went into the presence of his Lord September 29, 2013 at Atherton Baptist Homes where he had been a resident since 1995. He received a BA from Wheaton College in 1942, MA Wheaton College Graduate School in 1944, BD from Northern Baptist Seminary in 1946, and TSM from Faith Theological Seminary in 1947. Philip was a minister of the Presbyterian Church of America and served as a missionary with his first wife, Jane Buswell in Japan for over thirty years. He was founder and president of the Japan Christian Theological Seminary, today known as the Tokyo Christian University and Seminary, where he served as Professor of Apologetics and Greek. Philip also served with the US Center for World Mission in Pasadena for over twenty five years and as Chairman of the Japanese Evangelization Center in Los Angeles.
Philip was a gospel magician since childhood. After high school he was employed as a professional magician by the Lyceum Bureau in Chicago, which sent him all over the United States. He sometimes performed magic as often as five times a day in schools or other public venues. He was a member of the International Brotherhood of Magicians, Fellowship of Christian Magicians, the Magic Castle in Los Angeles and Alhambra Kiwanis. While in Japan he performed gospel magic for the military and hospital wards during the Viet Nam war. He is the author of "Missionary Magician". The family motto "Blessed to be a Blessing" and his love for his Savior, Jesus Christ was exemplified through his joyful spirit, humor, training and encouragement he offered to others.
He is survived by his second wife of thirteen years, Eillean (Lea) Eckardt-Foxwell, his loving children Mary (John) Loeks, Martha (Gaius) Berg, Linda (Ethan) Pettit, and Philip Ross Jr. (Anda), fourteen grandchildren and seventeen great-grandchildren. His only sister Barbara Coleman, 92 passed away September 9, 2013.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend the following Memorial Celebration of Life service at the First Baptist Church, 101 S. Atlantic Blvd. Alhambra, CA. October 13, 2013 at 2 pm. A Memorial Service will also be held at the Quarryville Presbyterian Home, 527 Park Avenue Quarryville, PA October 20, 2013 at 2 pm.
