Uncle Dan. My sensitive, athletic, funny, inclusive, travelled, and family-focused uncle.
It was a long goodbye.
Rest in peace

I have a recent memory of dan when he was in the hospital recently My dad was with his and was facetiming me to say hi and I remember that he physically was not in a very good shape but A bittersweet moment stuck with me after I said Iove you he looked at the phone that my dad was holding in front of him and gave me a big toothy grin I knew that his eyes didn't recognize me but his heart said otherwise and I defiantly felt that Thank you grandpa rest in peace

Dan was a very loving, caring, and thoughtful grandpa. Some of the memories I will forever cherish are when he would play wonderful songs on his guitar and I would dance along. I also will forever remember when he came up with the funniest nicknames for me and the whole family. I will never forget my amazing loving grandpa. Love, Wren

I had the honor of being a classmate of Dan's at Hastings College of Law in San Francisco. We were in the same section, commuted together from Berkeley, and were Moot Court partners. We both had strong progressive views and were active in opposing the war in Viet Nam. We both used our legal training to help others. Dan was active with United Farm Workers and I did civil legal work for the poor. I remember Dan as a great person.

Dan was a very loving father, grandfather and husband. He cared about the world, its people and most of all his family. He had a lot of great stories to tell and loved to tell them! :) He had a very gentle side to him- a lover of art, poetry, flowers and music. He had a warmth to him and really loved to enjoy life. I will remember many moments and will treasure them. I hope he enjoys the other side and his freedom from pain and suffering there. Rest in Peace, Dan. Love you, Desiree

We remember Dan as an athletic man who loved dogs. We remember when we played outside and he would always come and throw the ball for Snickers and Domino. He was an energetic guy who loved baseball. He was brave and served in the U.S Navy. We loved our grandpa so much but are glad his suffering is over. - Love Phoenix and Rhys

I remember Dan as someone who was energetic and had a good humor. I remember playing baseball in the backyard and screaming together when I hit a 'homerun'. I also remember the songs we would sing to go to sleep, and the different cannonballs he would do into the pool, as well as his raft he would sunbath on. Dan was great at making me laugh, and I will always remember that- Orion Lavery (Grandson)

In Memory of Dan Lavery
U.S. Naval Academy, Class of 1964, 20th Company
Dan and I were Naval Academy classmates, 20th Company-mates, but most importantly, friends. We served together on “Plebe Detail” second class summer and were responsible for guiding the newly arrived plebes through their rigorous summer regimen designed to prepare them for transition into the Brigade. During this two-month assignment, Dan and I came to know each other quite well. Although we did not stay in close contact after graduation, I was able to stay abreast of his exciting professional career and family life. Dan will be missed by many … but his Naval Academy Company-mates for certain. Below is a fun picture of a bunch of 20th Company Firsties goofing around in 1964. As might be expected, Dan is front and center, number 12.
May Dan Rest in Peace,
Andy Thompson
