I worked with Jere Young at Korb’s Trading Post from 1972 to 1974, my years after graduating high school and before going to Chico state to college.
I adored him and have fond memories of him to this day. He taught me advertising and print layout for the emerging chain of Korb’s Trading Post’s Levi’s stores. We often went to lunch at the Mercantile, in his metallic orange motorcycle with me in the Sidecar. He often spoke of his wife, Annie, with fondness.
I remember him as tall, lanky, and very good-natured. Most everyone seemed to love Jere in the store. He also did adverting work at that time for Lee Waisler, who, as the son-in-law of Mr. Korb, eventually took over the store, but was a painter and print making (lithograph) artist in his own right. For me… Lee Waisler never held a candle to the personality and charm of Jere Young. I still think of Jere fairly often after 50 years. He was always kind to me during a time when I really needed kindness.
I still remember many of the practical applications of graphic design he instilled in me those many years ago, and use them today, both in an artistic endeavor that I do for fundraising three times a year and in practical use for my own business.
I will always love you, Jere, as a dear mentor, and a friend.
