Alan was the youngest and longest surviving of three brothers, the oldest of which, Harry, was my father.
I was always proud to be his nephew, and whilst I alas failed to inherit his rugged good looks, my son, Tom, is almost his image as a young man. I recall one time when Alan and Norma called at our house (unannounced from the US), and my mother-in-law answered the door, he was unsure whether they had the correct address, until Tom, aged two, toddled into view and Alan knew immediately that they had indeed called at the right household.
I have fond memories of Alan when (before he set up home in the US) he would join us for a family holiday in Cornwall or take me to watch rugby league in Oldham. After he settled in California he and Norma made several trips back to the UK and when possible we would go out on outings, together with Annette, my wife, and our two children.
Alan was a wonderful man and very generous, full of adventure, and enthusiastic in everything he did. He will be sorely missed.
